Only few stations in Rio are spectacular, but all are spacious and have little advertising. Many have marble walls and some are architecturally interesting. The metro was inaugurated in 1979.

The metro stations are not spectacular but at a closer look you'll notice that most of the underground stations on line 1 are marble-clad and of a decent design. Explore Cardeal Arcoverde station.
Atlantic Ocean: Siqueira Campos or Cardeal Arcoverde stations (both underground) on Line 1 (5 to 10 minutes walk to Copacabana beach). Botafogo or Flamengo stations (both underground on Line 1: 10 minutes walk to Botafogo beach at Guanabara Bay).
A siren-like sound (resembling a crying baby or meowing cat) of variable duration announces the closing doors. A pre-recorded female voice announces the next stations in Portuguese and English ("Proxima estacao: [name] ... – Next stop: [name] station").
