Metro Arts and Architecture

Examples of interesting station design:

Rating: 1 star (bronze)  Naples

Line M1 has been turned into "Il Metro dell'Arte" as six stations have been upgraded with a lot of artworks [danpiz.net]. Museo station accommodates an archaeological exhibit of many objects found during metro construction [umuc.edu].

There are more interesting stations to follow when line M1 will be extended to finally become a circle line [contexttravel.com], [floornature.com].

Try the following tour, recommended by residents or metro enthusiasts:

Line M1 is the "Metro dell'Arte" with a lot of artworks in most stations. Museo station accommodates an archaeological exhibit of many objects found during metro construction.

Archaeology

Metro line 1 extension parallel to the coast leads along the ancient city wall through archaeologically interesting territory. Excavated objects are displayed in Museo station. In the future, more stations with archaeological exhibits will follow, including Duomo and Municipio stations (both to be opened in 2011) [9, 15].

Exhibits in stations:
  • Duomo station (to be opened in 2011): A Roman temple will be part of the station.
  • Museo: Several original objects found during metro construction are displayed in the station. Many more of them are in the National Archaeological Museum right above the station.

Reaching the Beaches

Mediterranean Sea: Mergellina (line 2), Arco Mirelli and San Pasquale stations (under construction on line 6), all 200 m from the beach of Via Caracciolo.

Circle Lines

Ring under construction - Line 1 - opened 1993 - completed 2011 - 8-shaped (inclinational loop).
Inclinational spiral - Line 1 - at Vanvitelli and Cilea/Quattro Giornate stations, underground, climbing up to a district 250 m above the city centre.
