Stuttgart, a major city in southwest Germany, has a dozen light rail (Stadtbahn) lines that have been converted from tram lines. The specially designed trains run in tunnels in the city centre, mostly on their own right-of way in the suburbs, and sometimes on streets. The conversion from metre-gauge trams to standard-gauge light rails involved started in 1985 and came to an end in 2007, when the last tram section, line 15, became line U15. There is an additional network of commuter rails (S-Bahn) with a shared tunnel section in the city.
